So work is done, I don't know the current status. Check the archives for the bug-hurd mailinglist. The root of the problem is that original version of the ufs and ext2 servers mmapped the entire partition. A 32-bit address space is only 4GB, and then the largest free contiguous area is typically somewhere between 1 and 2 GB.
