My first suggestion is to try the new version, GNU make 3.79. You can
get it at ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/make/ or many mirrors (see the
http://www.gnu.org site for a list).
If you continue to get errors with the latest version, then I think the
configure script is either not working correctly, or isn't interacting
with the build.sh script properly (I assume you don't have a "make"
already and that's why you're using build.sh, right?)
