Sun had the ingenious idea of hiding all the standard system utilities
like ar in the /usr/ccs/bin directory.
Try making sure that's on your PATH, then rerunning the build.
(Strange that you already have a make on your PATH, but not
/usr/ccs/bin? Where is the make you're using to build make?)
