FYI, my tests (on IRIX, Linux, and Solaris) indicate that %/../... does wind up stat'ing to the same file, but this behaviour may be different on other systems. If it is, the pattern could be changed to something like .%/../... which, although messier with the extra directories, should stat to the same file.
