This is true but than, $$@ is not an absolutely backward compatible feature either ;-). I was thinking about establishing a generic mechanism for handling such new features about which I give my thoughts in this thread http://mail.gnu.org/archive/html/help-make/2004-03/msg00105.html I would really appreciate it if you could comment on that. thanks, -boris
