You're right; they must have changed that since the first POSIX spec.

That's good... but nevertheless that syntax is not portable :).

Isn't this similar to one of your rules on how to write portable makefiles? Don't, instead install a portable make (ie GNU make)

Applied to this situation, install a portable shell :-)
