Note that this (DESTDIR) is a feature of automake, so any package which uses automake will understand this idiom.
The GNU autotools (autoconf/automake) are not trivial to use from a maintainer's standpoint, but they have a lot of wonderful benefits from the user's standpoint: lots of really nice and powerful features along with a consistent interface and usage pattern.
