How does the rule vary--can you parameterize it?
For example, if it varies only by $(CXXFLAGS):
$(LIST1): CXXFLAGS := flags1
$(LIST2): CXXFLAGS := flags2
%.cpp_o : %.cpp
$(CXX) $(CXXFLAGS) $< -o$@
