You can let make delete ‘test.txt’ after use by making it a prerequisite of the special .INTERMEDIATE goal, but I am not sure this is what you want.
What you do need is use ‘gzip -f $<’ or alternatively ‘gzip < $< > $...@’ to avoid the replace warning your original post mentioned. Other than that, I don’t see any problems with your Makefile.
