For the curious: I'm using Xcode version 4.6.3. Apple's lists a copy of
make on http://opensource.apple.com/release/developer-tools-46/.
The readme identifies it as 3.81, but unlike the stock 3.81, apple's
copy *doesn't* compile out of the box on my mac.

I've attached a diff of stock make 3.81 and apple's. I haven't given more
than a cursory glance at the patch. It does touch code that's messing
with jobserver fds. It also has a big ifdef about posix_spawn.

At this point my curiosity has dried up. I probably won't pursue this
any further on my own. If anyone else finds anything interesting I'd
love to hear about it!
