For the curious: I'm using Xcode version 4.6.3. Apple's lists a copy of make on http://opensource.apple.com/release/developer-tools-46/. The readme identifies it as 3.81, but unlike the stock 3.81, apple's copy *doesn't* compile out of the box on my mac. I've attached a diff of stock make 3.81 and apple's. I haven't given more than a cursory glance at the patch. It does touch code that's messing with jobserver fds. It also has a big ifdef about posix_spawn. At this point my curiosity has dried up. I probably won't pursue this any further on my own. If anyone else finds anything interesting I'd love to hear about it!
