There's very little help we can give without more detail. At the very minimum, we need to know what version of GNU make you're using and what your build platform is (Windows, GNU/Linux, MacOS, etc.) Also, we'd need to see an example of the make rule you use to recursively invoke the sub-make. There are some common idioms in use all over for invoking sub-makes which are wrong and can cause behaviors such as you are describing (not catching errors). To directly provide the only answer I can based on the information given, I'm not aware of any bugs or issues where GNU make will ignore errors and continue on, when use properly.
