Mark, I guess that maybe in your chroot you don't have gdb or strace or valgrind or whatever?
Does your build of make crash when run outside the chroot? If it does then you might be able to get it into a more normal situation. Dan's idea about using ldd and checking the help are good too as they might indicate where things are going wrong without needing any special tools.
