I was a bit surprised earlier when I tried to delete a block of
marked text and only one character was deleted at a time. I then found
"zap" in the docs and that Alt-Delete does the job.

Just wondering what the logic is behind this? To my mind, if text has
been marked, you're either going to cut, copy, or delete it. Is it a
Pico compatibility matter?

Correct. For ages, Delete just deleted one character at a time --
it wouldn't be a good idea to change that. That's why Alt+Delete
was added, but also --zap and 'set zap', to make a plain Delete
or Backspace delete the marked region.
