I applied the two patches; everything is in the git version, but I also
built a .tar.gz for those who are experiencing the problem

could you please try whether this version's configure fixes this issue?

Lorenzo, attached are two patches. I am new to 'git'
and don't know the best method for providing patches,
so have just attached them here and am sending them
off list. If there's a better way, let me know.
The first patch imports from up-stream. The second
patch improves a couple of diagnostics.
