Yes, I'm aware of such problems. But these problems affect every application, not just 'tar', and they should be fixed at their source. We shouldn't have to make painful changes to nearly every application to work around deficiencies in the virus scanners or the kernels or whatever. All the problems that you mention (including machine crashes) can be fixed inside the scanners or kernels involved.
