The usual way to run tests is something like this: ./configure; make; make check
so I suggest running that. If there are failures, it could be a bug in 'tar' or it could be a bug in your platform; to figure things out, look in the files left behind in tests/testsuite.dir. You'll need some expertise with the shell etc. Good luck.
