The question is: is it more or less confusing to print/display the
    hyphen in a line line:

IMNSHO, it is more confusing.  We don't want to print the synthesized -
character as part of the url, since then copy/past won't work, people
will inevitably think the - is part of the url, etc.  So I think @url
needs its own rules (allow breaks at / and maybe ., don't insert any
characters).

BTW, Texinfo has TeX's discretionary hyphen command (@-) now, althouhg
it's just ignored in makeinfo, when it should output ­ or whatever
in HTML (and XML and maybe Docbook).  One day, maybe ...
