Pit Bull Breaks Chains,
Kills 2 Poodles Inside Neighbor's House
Pit Bull Owner, Ruben Roth, Cited For Having Dangerous Dog
POSTED: 6:37 am MST January 26, 2005UPDATED: 10:27 am MST January 26, 2005
A pit bull's owner faces charges after one of his three pit bulls broke free from its chain and mauled two poodles to death at a neighbor's house near Berthoud.
Debra Stevens arrived home Monday night to find her black toy poodle, Buddy, mauled to death in a dog run outside her Weld County home, Sheriff John Cooke said in a statement Tuesday. Her white teacup poodle, Baby, was found dead inside Stevens' blood-smeared kitchen.
Her neighbor's dog, Jada, apparently sneaked into the house through a dog door.
"After the initial shock wore off and I saw the paw prints in the blood, I knew it had to be Jada," Stevens said. "She's gotten loose before and she's come after me and my dogs."
Stevens' neighbor, Ruben Roth, was issued a summons for having a dog at large and a dangerous dog. He is scheduled in court Thursday.
Roth, 29, said he has three children and his dog has never been aggressive. He believes Jada mistook Stevens' poodles for rabbits or cats.
"I'm an honest guy. I know what happened," said Roth.
Roth had previously been issued a summons for dog at large for the same pit bull that's been responsible for the attack. Roth turned over his dog to authorities and believes it will be euthanized this week.
"I know my dog did wrong. It's just unfortunate," he said.
Roth's dog was quarantined at the Weld County Humane Society.
The attack, which occurred in the 1900 block of County Road 4012, happened on the same day that two other pit bulls killed a cat and chased an animal control officer and a woman in Westminster. Police said an officer had to shoot the dogs to stop them from charging. One of the pit bulls died, another is recovering at the Table Mountain Animal Shelter.
