Mullen Jr. RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL 4/19/2005 11:42 pm A University of Nevada, Reno whistle-blower’s teaching and research job depends on whether four members of a campus disciplinary committee believe that taking blood, skin and fecal samples from two pigs amounts to a firing offense. The panel, made up of retired Carson City district judge Michael Fondi and three faculty members, heard his case for seven hours Tuesday. It was still deliberating Tuesday evening. But even if panel members decide to dismiss the charges or recommend sanctions short of termination, the final decision in the case rests with John Lilley, university president, according to the institution’s code of regulations. Hussein S. Hussein, an internationally-known animal nutritionist who last year filed federal animal abuse complaints against UNR, admitted he paid a Reno veterinarian in May and June to examine and do tests on research pigs. The 10 boars, he said, were inexplicably placed in a university farms building he controlled.
