SERBIAN DOGS IN DANGER
Director of Veterinary Department, Mr. Dejan Krnjajic handed down a decision
which pronounces Svilajnac and Vranje area contaminated with rabies, after the
hunters had allegedly found a dead fox in the forest and allegedly was proved
that it was infected with rabies. The same decision ordered, instead of at
least 18 measures given in the Veterinary Law article 64., only one measure,
and that is extermination of stray cats and dogs, citing The Regulations 39/88
valid in SFRJ (ex Yugoslavia) in 1988, which is not in accordance with
Veterinary Law of RS 91/05.

TOROS DE FUEGO
Medinaceli (Soria) "Toros de Fuego " (Fire bulls).
In Catalonia (Spain) animals are still being abused in bullfighting events,
such as, the "toros de fuego", when balls of fire are attached to the bulls'
horns, then they are released on the streets, and the "toros ensogados", when
ropes are tied around the bulls' horns and they are dragged through the streets.

CAMPAIGN AGAINST REINTRODUCTION OF BULLFIGHTS MARGARITA ISLAND, VENEZUELA

We discovered in the Venezuelan newspaper entitled "Diario 2001" that there are
plans to reintroduce bullfights in Margarita Island. Margarita Island had
bullfights many years ago. Now they are planning to stage one next 29th
December and more during 2007. Although Venezuela has bullfights we must not
allow them to spread.

BAN ON WILD ANIMALS IN CIRCUSES IS KEPT UPHELD
At the end of 2005, the Commission sent a letter of formal notice initiating
infringement proceedings against Austria. The letter states that the ban on
wild animals in circuses imposed by the Austrian Federal Law on Animal Welfare
runs counter to the principle of freedom of services. The reason given is that
animals may perform in circuses in other countries. If these circuses were to
visit Austria, they would be forced to change their programme and leave behind
some of their animals before entering Austria or accommodate them somewhere.

On 12th December 2006 the Commission formally closed the infringement
proceedings.

ANIMAL WELFARE IN TRANSPORT: NEW EU RULES ENTER INTO FORCE
The new Regulation on animal welfare in transport enters into force tomorrow, 5
January 2007. European Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou said: "This
important animal welfare legislation aims to reduce the stress and harm that
animals can experience during land and sea journeys. Among the new safeguards
for animals being introduced are higher standards for vehicles and equipment,
and stricter requirements for those dealing with animals in transport. The
Regulation also provides for measures to ensure the better enforcement of EU
rules in this area, such as the use of satellite navigation systems."
