SULPHUR, Oklahoma - An Oklahoma town is under fire for
alleged cruelty at a public animal shelter.
People in Sulphur say hundreds of animals go to the shelter to die and city
leaders say that's not true. But animals activists say politics are more
important than pets.
The Justice for Sulphur OK Animals' Facebook page has more than 2500 fans who
are angry, emotional, and want a change in their community.
Jesi Allen tried to give the pups a chance, but was told no homeowners in
Sulphur city limits can adopt dogs.
"I think the truth really is find them, catch them, kill them. I mean I don't
see any other truth besides what it is," Allen said.
Former employees call the conditions deplorable, and city leaders claim they
are disgruntled.
"We can't go into the property to look at dogs, if we were wanting to adopt,
they bring dogs out to let you look at them and that is not how you conduct
business," former employee Scott Prall said.
The city manager refused an interview, but said there isn't enough staff to man
the shelter, and at this point the dogs aren't adoptable.
"People need to get behind and be proactively rather than running their mouths
without the facts," city manager Bill Holley said.
City leader told News 9 they are teaming up with the nearby town of Davis to
build a joint shelter.
So far they have raised $51,000, but say an adequate facility will cost about
$500,000.

It appears that this is a government run facility. This makes them subject to
the Open Records Act. Put your questions in writing. Surely Sulpher has a web
site listing, Mayor, City Manager and the Supervisor of the Animal Welfare
Division or something like that. Request the number of animals taken in
(within a particular time frame) and the number euthanized. I'm wondering what
they think makes an animal adoptable? Is it because they are not Neutered,
spayed or do not have their shots? Find some volunteer vets or have the
persons adopting sign saying they will have these things done. No response may
tell you it's time to involve the County Sherriff. How about the Oklahoma
Humane Society or the ASPCA?

Not from there, but no animal should be without someone to take care of it. If
they are not letting anyone in to check on the animals that to me sounds like
they have something to hide. Hope they get this resollved before anything bad
happens to the animals

Why doesn't this City just turn over the job of Animal Control to a volunteer
organization? I can't imagine having my dog picked up and taken there, and
NOT BEING ABLE TO GO LOOK FOR HIM? This makes Sulpher look like some third
world city.

I think there may be a state law (and if there isn't, there should be) which
requires that - in the absence of adequate facilities or adequate personnel - a
shelter should use the closest existing adequate facility. Clearly this
facility is inadequate and should be shut down. That doesn't mean funds
shouldn't be raised for a new shelter, but allowing this one to continue to
operate is intolerable. Someone needs to find out who is responsible for
INSPECTING these facilities and making sure they meet basic standards,
particularly with people who are licensed euthanasia technicians. I doubt there
are any veterinarians or licensed techs overseeing euthanasias at this
facility, much less seeing that animal care meets certain standards.

What I think is that this news 'report' was to most ignorant thing I've tried
to listen to for ages. (Funny that everytime I tried to play it I had to endure
some pointless advertising.) The article was full of grammatical errors and
made your station look like a circus act. Everything that was alluded to in
this article makes this situation seem more dire. Where are the HSUS and other
organizations? Let's contact an agency that knows how to fight this. I don't
think they want help, money or a solution. It seems like many people are
"get(ting) behind and be 'proactively' (proactive?-try knowing how to use it in
a sentence, for starters.) And if we're not to be "running our mouths off", let
someone inspect the place, then we'll have our facts. And why not contact the
nearby town of Davis to check up on that joint shelter statement? I believe
it's called investigative reporting.
