[Apologies if you receive this more than once. Please forward to
interested parties, especially students and early-career researchers.]
Dear Colleague,
We are pleased to announce the 3GC4: HI Fidelity Workshop to be held in
Port Alfred, South Africa, during the period 24 October - 4 November
2016. You can pre-register for this workshop at our webpage:
http://www.ast.uct.ac.za/3gc4hifidelity/
3GC refers to the "3rd Generation of Calibration" and encompasses the
advanced techniques needed for the post-selfcal/high-dynamic-range era
of radio astronomy. We have organised three highly successful workshops
focused on unique problems under the 3GC umbrella:
http://mcct.skads-eu.org/nancay/nancay-mcct.php
http://www.astron.nl/3GC-II/
https://sites.google.com/a/ska.ac.za/3gc3/home
3GC4: HI Fidelity builds upon this effective formula to address problems
specific to HI science in the era of the SKA pathfinders
(MeerKAT/APERTIF/ASKAP/JVLA) and the SKA itself. This includes, but
isn't limited to: calibration, multi-frequency imaging, pipelines,
archiving, source finding and the kinematical analysis of data cubes and
velocity fields.
We have assembled an exciting team of invited speakers who are experts
in a variety of topics ranging from the technical to the scientific
analysis of radio data.
The workshop is conducted over two weeks and we expect 40-50
participants, the majority of which will be students and early career
researchers.
The first week is dedicated to the radio school and involves teaching,
tutorials and projects. The aim is to give students and early-career
researchers a crash course in the basics of calibration and imaging,
finishing off with advanced exercises in data analyses unique to HI
science cases.
The second week is lecture- and tutorial-based, during which we focus on
advanced topics in calibration, imaging analysis and techniques directly
relevant to scientific delivery, with a particular emphasis on HI
science. This includes discussing the challenges involved in developing
pipelines, archives and software.
The overall goal of the workshop is promote learning and discussion
between all the participants. We've found that our format of
talks/tutorials/discussions provides something for everyone - from the
student to the specialist.
Our workshop venue, The Halyards Hotel, is in the idyllic Eastern Cape
town of Port Alfred, and is close to modern amenities. We plan to
arrange a few exciting outdoor activities that will provide a welcome
break from the workshop activities.
*We are especially pleased to be able to offer accommodation (bed &
breakfast) for South African based students for the duration of the
workshop. *
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions at our workshop
email address:

A follow-up to this announcement will be issued shortly. This will
include a registration form, logistical details and the workshop programme.
Looking forward to seeing you in Port Alfred!
Regards,
Bradley Frank, on behalf of the HI Fidelity SOC.
