In which availability zone should I spin up my RDS instances in order to minimize Regional Data Transfer costs? If I read Amazon's pricing correctly, if my RDS instance runs in the same availability zone as my Heroku instances, then transfer rate drops to $0/Gbit (free).
There's still RDS in/out costs, so maybe the Regional Data Transfer fees don't turn out to be significant in the long run?
