Cheers John, but had made a rookie enough error. I had been pushing an empty sqlite DB to heroku and had not been backing it up, and then later I pushed a new version (with another empty sqlite db) and so the original with its lovely records was overwritten irretrievably. I hadn't been doing any db pulls as backups.. lesson learned..
I talked to the support guys and the ephemeral system is well.. ephemeral and not backed up! Original error came from partly my own laziness and assuming that everything that was in a well known online tutorial was gospel! Anyway lesson learned, I've invested the time in sweet local postgres love and am reaping the rewards now!
