FWIW, the answer is that even if you dutifully instruct your server to listen on process.env.PORT, it still listens to only port 80 anyways :-/
You don't need to specify the port or anything unusual on the client, but you do need to configure the server for Herokuness<https://devcenter.heroku.com/articles/using-socket-io-with-node-js-on-heroku> . It took me a good while to figure this out, so if I saved you trouble, pay me back by going out and doing a good deed.
