gem 'spree', git: 'https://github.com/spree/spree.git', branch: '2-1-stable'
--> my slug is 262 MB gem 'spree', '2.1.12' if I point my Spree app to a gem built with a reference to an open github repo, when it compiles & builds at 262 MB. When I point it to the packaged gem at Ruby gems -- basically the same exact set of code with about 4 small commit difference -- it compiles & builds at 192 MB. So it appears to me that there is a HUGE overhead in terms of slug size if you point a gem to build from Github source rather than using a Rubygem's built version.
