Scott Ferguson asked in returned to Barb Cochrane's mail (below) that
he is interested to learn how exactly Hessian is going to be used in
Eclipse.
I have been a user of Hessian for over 4 years. (I guess you find my
name somewhere in the Hessian-interest archives). We have a commercial
application here in Germany with 30000+ users that uses Hessian as
client / server protocol. I have also written a article in germans
Java Magazine about the advantage of Hessian compared to SOAP which
(is in german) and can be found here Smart Clients - Web Services,
Java Magazin, Nr. 11, 2006.
Hessian is used in the application as the core communication protocol
for the base framework that addresses many issues of Smart Clients.
This commerical closed source framework is called 'Spirit'.
Last year we decided to move to the Eclipse Ecosystem and recreate
"Spirit" under a new name and of course as open source in the Eclipse
community. The name of this effort is "Riena" of which I am the
project lead. Information about Riena can be found here http://www.eclipse.org/riena

Riena is a base framework for enterprise client server applications
that are based on Equinox/OSGi. We use Hessian there to enable OSGi
Services as Remote Services. Riena addresses the distributed aspect of
components through Hessian but also UI, Persistence, Software Update,
Object Transactions and many many more things.
On our project page you can get access to the newsgroup, the wiki.
Next presentations are in March in Santa Clara on the EclipseCon 2008
and in April on the JAX 2008 in Wiesbaden, Germany.
Riena is only on the beginning (no official release yet). It will be
modular so that i.e. you can use communication without using the rest.
The next planned version 0.1 is for end of February.
A previous version of the Riena communication piece was published
under the name Nyota. Documentation and even a download is available
for the curious http://eclipse.compeople.eu/wiki/index.php/Nyota:Main.
However Nyota has a number of flaws and shortcommings. So I don't
really recommend using it, but the documentation gives you an
impression how it will also work in Riena.

There has been interest expressed in using Hessian within Eclipse
(our URL is below :-)). As part of our review, we complete due
diligence on any code proposed for inclusion in Eclipse.
I have a quick question, and I hope you can answer it or point me
toward someone who can. Can you tell me whether the Hessian project
asks members and contributors to acknowledge in writing or via e-
mail that they are giving their contribution to Hessian under the
Apache 1.1 license?
