"The Open Toolbox for Domestic Disaster Response" examines the role of open ideas in producing rapidly scalable "service ecologies" for disaster relief, drawing parallels between the scalability of services like data centers and the potential for extreme scalability in disaster relief using technologies like the Hexayurt. The paper is online at http://TheOpenToolbox.com and there will be subsequent work on Open Toolboxes for other contingencies and scenarios, including development and certain specialized kinds of distressed environments. The Open Toolbox concept is to act a little like Red Had did for Linux in the early days - help commercialize open (hardware) technologies, particularly appropriate technology, and use the proceeds to fund accelerated development of the underlying systems, all under open license.
