Yes, using the jack is brilliant. But it does require forethought, because the top of the jack will only get so close to the ground.
Forgot to mention about bending the rebar: you can easily bend it so tight that it snaps, so it helps to adjust the galvanized over the course of bending it, so as to give a larger radius of curvature.
