2010 was my first Burning Man, & first Hexayurt. Like so many others I
was dissatisfied with the filament tape. It didn't stick (I sprayed
all surfaces to be taped with adhesive before taping), and when I
looked at it a couple of months later it was yellowed.
At Burning Man my biggest problem was the filament tape didn't conform
to the irregularities of the panels. This allowed water to go right
under the tape band connecting roof to base & right into my Hexayurt.
Bummer. I know that I was supposed to really work the tape into all
the seams and divots of the panels but the filament tape just wouldn't
go. Someone has suggested FlexFix tape as a much cheaper & better tape
overall. I wanted to sell my Hexayurt so I could build a new one. I
repaired my first Hexayurt with FlexFix tape by running a layer of
FlexFix tape on each side of the filament tape, and then over the
existing tape. This maintained the strength of the filament tape while
giving great adhesion and UV protection. It also covered the seams of
a non-beveled Hexayurt so no light leaked in. The FlexFix tape also
conformed to the irregularities of the panels with no gaps. I love
this tape at $12/roll.

My next yurt will be taped using the process I just described. This
should also save a bundle on tape expenses. I'm also working on a
labyrinth seal for the roof to base & tarp to sides connections.
Picture a 6" flap taped on the outside of the yurt with the edge of
the tape underneath. This should provide a mechanical seal as well as
the taped seal. This could also work on the tape band connecting the
roof to sides. If anyone can help or suggest an update to my tape idea
please do so. I don't pretend I know what I'm doing.
