It can handle a bit, if you are concerned, some folks use a 1/4 ply
sandwhich.  foam on outside, 1/4 ply construction glued on the "inside.

You can also reinforce with 1/4 plywood splines between the sheets of foam.
 I've also seen lightwight "T" or "" shaped metal moulding used between
sheet.  the cross of the "T" or base of the "L" go towards the inside.  It
provides a lot more rigidity than you woul think.  imagine lightweight I
beam concept.
