About tape: I mean to edit the appropedia page and put a few videos
out, but here's the downlow on tape:
Duct tape: gets goopey and melty in the heat. I do not advise it on
playa.
Bilfilament: awesome stuff, but the sun crumbles it after a period of
time. The best things about it are the 6 inch width, and the filaments
which create strength. After 30 days on playa-- it peels right off due
to UV damage. My hexayurt made it through two years of 8-10 day playa
visits without re taping. I am prepared to re-tape all my hinges anew
this year, I believe my tape is toasted.
The solution: I am a danger-hinge hexayurter, not a "classic
construction" hexayurter. That means that most of the tape I apply to
my yurt is there permanently, planned to be re-used. My solution I
give to hinge-hexayurters is to use the bilfilament tape as usual, but
when you're taping your hinges at home, COVER the bilfilament tape
with silver foil tape. Silver foil tape is pretty cheap and comes in a
variety of widths, available easily at a hardware store. This does
mean a more expensive tape investment, but it should mean a ONE TIME
tape investment for your hinges.
Second tape advice: you do not have to use the expensive bilfilament
tape to "tape seal" the edges of your hexayurt boards. Standard
packing tape (clear, sticky stuff), or foil tape, will work to seal
the edges and holds up very well after sun exposure. (I do have video
to prove this...it's just not online yet). Gorrilla tape would be ok
here too but overpriced I believe.
Lastly: plan ahead! Tape gets removed during tear-down of the yurt.
Tape peels off the silver finish of the panels. This is a problem
where you tape the tarp up the out-sides of the yurt. So, put a
permanent layer of any kind of tape (even cheap stuff, or contact
paper) along the zone where your tarp will be taped. This way, cutting
the tarp off the yurt will not damage the foil.
That is all, for now.

Dan the question as to duct tape vs bilfilament tape is a bigger and
more
relevant question than as to whether the tape should be outside or
inside.
The reason I say this is, whether your tape goes on the outside or the
inside depends not only on the yurt design that YOU are going to do,
but it
also depends on the hinge technique *you* will be using as well. So
these
2 variables aside...
Honestly, almost all my bifilament tape that was exposed to the sun
last
year completely dried out, it was just crispy and dead, and peeled
right
off, ergo it was essentially worthless (but it held up). The
question is,
had the winds last year been the normal strong winds you get at BM,
would
that tape not have held up? Based on past experiences from other
yurters,
it seems the tape does hold up even when crispy and fried. But it's
definitely garbage for the next time you're going to use your yurt
again.
The bifilament tape that is not exposed to the sun stays VERY
strong, and
seems to be very resistant to punctures, dings and the sort. I don't
know
how resistant duct tape would be in this aspect. If you go with
bifilament
tape, and you want the outside tape to last for next year as well,
than
cover all sun-exposed bifilament tape with foil tape.
There are people that have substituted bifilament tape with duct tape,
however the tape I've used, and the duct tape I have seen the most
positive
feedback on is Gorilla duct tape. The problem is gorilla duct tape
does
not come in 6" widths. At least I have not come across any. And
depending
on the hinges you're doing, you may need 6" wide tape, hence the
need for
bifilament once again.
I hope this is of assistance to you. If anyone else has differing
experience or opinions, please chime in.

tape for sale

hello all,
I am in Canada and I have some tape for sale.
Was going to build a hexayurt, but the hardware store mucked up my
order
(ordered 10 sheets when they charged me for 13). I'm part of the
Production
Crew at Shambhala Music Festival in Salmo, BC and I am now on site
full-time working 12+ hr days until our festival (Aug 8-13)... I
just don't
have time to wait for them to fix their mistake and build the
hexayurt now.
Ah well... plans change, and I'm rolling with it.
Anyway - I would love to get this tape off my hands, since I am no
longer
using it.
I have 5 of these (6")
http://www.thetapeworks.com/tape/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=272
and 3 of these (3")
http://www.thetapeworks.com/tape/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=506
I paid $226 total for the lot (incl shipping). Would like to sell it
all in
one go if possible. Make me an offer.
Cheers!
