Hi, I helped with the growth statistics, creating a simple spreadsheet to chart the numbers @thejaymo painfully counted from satellite pictures in the past 2 (not 3, I think) years. I'm quite sure we don't have counts for 2009 - just a rough interpolation guess.
Away from computer these days, but maybe we could create a wikipage in Appropedia.org showing the stats, making room for links to Jay's article, the spreadsheet, pictures (that first year, Vinay; this 2009 picture; more if available), etc. Maybe, with time, we'd gather more precise numbers from the NSA (Non Statistified Ages). Of course, an interesting number will be this year's, with all the different shapes and all!
