A rope halo is quite easy. To quote the Camp Danger page of the apropedia
site:

"Make a circle out of rope-- big enough that it rests on the roof cone
somewhere that you can reach it. Fasten from the halo to the ground stakes
with 6 other sections of rope. Now you can take the time to make everything
equal lengths and pretty. You'll need some extra hands for this part."

If you want to make sure your rope ring and ground ties slide less against
each-other. Make the ring of the halo out of a braid of three strands, and
then just select one of the strands (preferably not the one that is staked
down on the adjacent sides, if you use three different coloured strands,
it's easier to tell)) and tie your line to that.

There are many different ways of tightening your strings. For my favorite,
you need three things, the line attached to your halo, a "U" made out of
rebar, and a piece of strong material (wood, metal, thick plastic, et al)
that has two holes about the size of your rope punched into it, so it looks
like a domino-masque without the face-shaping bits (slider). Then you slide
the working end of your rope (the end not tied to your halo) through one of
the holes in the slider, under the bit of the U sticking up from the
ground, and then through the other hole. Knot your rope once pulled
through the second hole, then when all the sliders are set, get a bunch of
fun folks to all at the same time (so the tension is even) pull the sliders
along the side of the rope that doesn't have the knot until tight. Then
hang some reflective tape off of your ropes, so folks don't trip on them.
