Heat is the main issue in Southern California. Even near the coast, there is oppressive heat far more often than ruinous cold weather.
I'm about to experiment with creating a hex-pod outside, using rebar as framework for concrete-impregnated fabric, the whole to be mauled into something approaching a usable sheet material for walls. I'm attracted to the low cost, high strength and ability to consider "pinning" the frame to an affordable foundation. With "Titan" footings, a portable drill could be all you need to pin a substantial structure to most dirt. It's currently being marketed to support deck piers. Obviously, I'm not talking Burning Man hexayurts, rather a way to create an owner-built shelter that could be expected to last a few years, even if hauled around behind a truck.
