I used turpentine when doing my refurbish.   It takes a bit of elbow grease 
and you should be careful not to get any on bare R-MAX foam, but it does do 
a good job cleaning the surfaces of all gum.

Wear gloves!

Leave the panels out in the sun for a few hours to evaporate any residual 
turpentine.
