Hi Kevin!
What are the dimensions of the Chinook? I have a Cavallaro custom made soft
case that I can loan that is not being used at the moment, and if the
instrument fits, I can certainly loan the bag to you. I have flown
transatlantic with the instrument in the overhead compartment several times,
with no problems.

best,
Vlad

Subject: [HG] soft or hard case?

Greetings,
I am new to the list. I live in Knoxville, TN, in the foothills of the
Smoky Mountains (anyone know of any gurdy players in East TN, NC,
Atlanta??). I teach circle dance, play the fiddle, and have been
hearing "the call of the gurdy" for several years now. I visited Alden
and Cali last summer, tried out some gurdies, and placed an order for
one. I talked to Alden yesterday and learned that they are going to
have a new "Chinook" gurdy ready for me to pick up when I go out there
next month.

So, I need to decide whether to get a soft case that I can carry on
planes or a hard Pelican case that can be checked. I am very familiar
with the peaks and valleys of airport security paranoia- I flew to
France for a dance camp three months ago but had to leave my fiddle
(which belonged to my grandfather) home because I could not carry it on
the plane - and I was not willing to check it. Since then security
restrictions have relaxed and the TSA says on its website that its OK
now to carry instruments on the plane- at least for domestic flights.

I am very inclined to get the soft case, stow it in the overhead bin,
and keep a close eye on it when I travel. Does anyone have any recent
experience with flying with a gurdy? What are your thoughts,
recommendations?

On a different note- I had a quick look at the archives for this email
group on the Olympic website. They seem to peter out in 2002. Are there
up-to-date archives available somewhere for this group?

thanks!!!
Kevin Meyer
