I don't play Irish music on my HG, but I've found that knowing something about the strikes, taps, rolls, and cranns of Irish piping/ whistle playing offers some interesting possibilities for the HG player. A lot of the ornaments can, in fact, be emulated on the HG, with some modification and some planning. The HG won't pass for pipes at that level, but you *can* use the ornaments (or “articulations,” as Gray Larsen would insist) in interesting and striking ways to give an Irish feel or even just as more elements to play with.

Hi Joel
I have put together a few Irish tunes on CD and it's available through my website under " Irish Music on Hurdy-gurdy". I'm not sure I agree with players who maintain the gurdy is trying to emulate the pipes., It is, after all, its own instrument with its own character and brings to the music a different feel. It may not be to everyones taste but " if you can't please everyone " etc.!

Welcome to the list
