  Gz is short for Gnu zip - basically a unix style compression.  Actually, 
winzip will open gz files.  However, when I downloaded these files, you will 
see that most are automatically converted to .ps files (postscript).  If you 
try to use winzip to open this, you will get an invalid archive directory.  It 
appears that the decompression is happening on the server end, and you are 
getting the raw file.  

   

  There are various ways to run .ps files on a Windows box, however it is 
probably easier to just download the pdf versions.  I downloaded the abc file 
and opened it with wordpad no problems.  Check your extensions carefully.
