The reference that I ran across many years ago, indicated that Watkin's
was a well known tavern and 'pleasure house', if you know what I mean. 
So going into town for a little 'Watkin's Ale' had more than one meaning,
and it is a nice tune as well.  Perhaps some of our English brethren can
chime in here.
