What other use could the builders have for putting in a tirant pin without a chien and bridge except for aesthetics?

At least one maker I know is putting an (second) "tirant" pin to the stringholder to pull at the bridge. Its meaning is to stop the bridge from moving against the wheel. Also the bridge can be pulled with the "tirant" to change the open strings lenght i.e. the intonation of the upper keys.
