I want to take up the hurdy-gurdy, and have decided I want to order a 5-string
Hungarian tekero from Bela Szerenyi (I like this style of instrument). I'd
like to get some feedback for a beginner, so I know what options I'm best off
ordering on my first instrument.

In case anyone owns a tekero (or his specifically), I have a few questions
I'll post openly:

  1) The maker's website states that his instrument can be ordered with bass
tuning (one octave lower). Does this just mean you can get thicker strings for
low pitch? or is that a different model of hurdy-gurdy altogether?

  2) I was curious if the tekero has the option of a "capo" to quickly change
the pitch of a drone (eg, from D to G), or of a trompette (eg, from C to D). I
attach a copy of an email the maker sent me which seems to indicate something
like this.

  3) Is there any advantage to 6 strings on a tekero?

  4) Is there any advantage between the Hungarian- and French-style wheel
setups?

"The wheel diameter of the Hungarian hurdy-gurdies is 14 cm, the wheel-base
of their crank is 5 cm, but you can also ask for a French type wheel (18 cm)
and crank (8 cm)."

Thanks for any advice, including on matters I didn't think to ask--

Hi Rob,
Of course I can make a HG with six strings, but what you have need 3
bass (drones) strings for? Maybe about different tuning on bass strings? If
it yes, than I have an idea to solv this problem with only one bass
string. I recently made a HG with this technic. On those HG there are turnable
voice swiches just only one bass string. With this you can change the high of
voice.
Are you interested in this technical solving?

best regards,
Bela Szerenyi
