I know someone who has a hurdy-gurdy for sale. He's selling off his late wife's instrument collection, as he's a singer, not a player.
It's a small symphony, chromatic over 2 octaves or so (I neglected to count the keys for an exact check). It has two chanterelles and two drones, no dog. Ryan isn't sure who the maker is -- he thinks it was purchased in England. I couldn't find a maker's mark on it. When I looked at it, it seemed to be well put together and functional. I didn't spend a lot of time shimming to get a good sound, but a quick shove of some paper under the chanterelles made a noticeable difference, so I think it will clean up nicely with just regular maintenance type work. It held tuning pretty well (friction pegs), and the tangents I moved didn't need a lot of force to move them, and stayed where I put them. It's a nice little instrument, IMHO suitable for someone who wants to sing troubadour repertoire while accompanying themselves, or something similar. Ryan has pictures available for those who ask.
