Just a thought,
It's possible you are getting an unwanted harmonic from the bridge - if it
is too light, it can vibrate at a frequency which does strange things to the
normal string vibration. Try adding some weight to the bridge ( a pound coin
with BluTack ). If this fixes it, you can try using lighter coins. Once the
optimum weight it found, glue a small piece of lead of the same weight in
the same position .

I'm still having a frustrating problem with my chanter string on my C-G
gurdy. It tends to sound an octave too high when I play the fifth note
(D).
Following helpful replies to an earlier post, I've tried (a) changing the
cotton, (b) adjusting the shimming, (c) changing the string, (d) raising
the nut, (e) lowering the nut, (f) taking off all the rosin and
re-rosining, (g) swapping the tangent with one from another key. None of
these has fully solved the problem, which is intermittent. I can only
guarantee to stop it by pushing down the string next to the nut so it
crosses the tangent 1-2mm lower. More rosin helps, but makes the sound
too scratchy.
Any more ideas please?
