Hi
I was recently commissioned to renew the bearings on an EMS Henry 3 model
and took it on with some trepidation.
The sound of the instrument when I got it was very weak and thin. I soon
discovered that the axle runs in 2 bronze bushes, one in the lower bout-
fair enough , but the front bush was fitted into the strut beneath the
bridge.
This effectively makes the weight of the wheel and axle act as a mute for
the chanterelles.
Replacing the whole thing with a longer axle and one bearing fitted in the
lower bout, the front bearing fitted in the keybox end strut has transformed
the tone of the instrument.
If only the tangents and keys were more substantial and the bourdon bridge
was further back, it could be a good gurdy.

Subject: [HG] Re:
Please, please put something in the SUBJECT line. I nearly deleted your
message not realising it was HG related. I have probably done so with
others
you have sent, sorry.
I'm honestly not impressed with EMS. I think they have a gang of monkeys
putting the stuff together (at least my dulcimer, anyway).
There have been many posts on a budget HG (look through the archives) but,
you must remember, there is no such thing as a cheap HG. They take so long
to make, if it's cheap, it's no good.A budget model from a reputable
maker,
however, that's a different story.
It's £800 - £1200 for a budget job, If you are looking at cheaper, you are
not going to get a good HG or you will be needing to do a lot of work on
it
as it will be broken or badly damaged and repairs take a LOT of skill.
If your budget won't reach this, keep saving - it's worth it.
You could think symphonie, of course. They rend to be cheaper and give you
the sound.
