I think I read somewhere that you can also use human hair in place of thread.

   Howdy all,

I just got back from doing the Las Vegas Renaissance Faire and it was super dry yet again. While there I spent the majority of day one just trying to make the tangents stay put while I played. I tried the wetting trick and it worked until they shrunk and did the tangent tango again. I thought "I'll just use thread", only to find I didn't have any and was to lazy to go looking. So I invented (reinvented, stole, borrowed ect.) the idea of using cotton to tighten the tangents. I rolled it like thread, only thicker, and put it in place for the rest of the show and it worked great.

If this has already been suggested for a temporary fix I thought I would mention it as I had not yet heard it.
