No need to roll the cotton. Another variation on this is to spread
the cotton wide, put the stem of the tangent in the middle, and then
put everything in the hole so that the fibers spread out around the
stem evenly and run vertically along it.

Howdy all,
I just got back from doing the Las Vegas Renaissance Faire and
it was super dry yet again. While there I spent the majority of day
one just trying to make the tangents stay put while I played. I
tried the wetting trick and it worked until they shrunk and did the
tangent tango again. I thought "I'll just use thread", only to find
I didn't have any and was to lazy to go looking. So I invented
(reinvented, stole, borrowed ect.) the idea of using cotton to
tighten the tangents. I rolled it like thread, only thicker, and
put it in place for the rest of the show and it worked great.
If this has already been suggested for a temporary fix I
thought I would mention it as I had not yet heard it.
