Tony, I have tried both positions on the instrument, but I must confess that it was a while ago and I think at the time I determined that it seemed best in the traditional position. I tend to have more weight on the octave chanter and that doesn't seem to affect the notes farther up as it did the high chanter. At the time it did not occur to me that the string pressure changed on the wheel as the tangents are pushed so I think that I assumed it was a shimming issue. Although looking at the issue in relation to pressure on the wheel it seems that the octave chanter in the traditional position is best. It would seem that the men who designed and build the instruments so long ago would have considered or experienced this and they would have kept the positions as they are now. Something to be said for tradition. Scott
