We need a side view, Graham. There is a misconception here. The chien
does not move up & down the string but pivots on the end nearest the
bridge. The other end is held down by the string and is so poised that
when turning the wheel slowly both ends (of the chien) remain in contact
with the soundboard, but on turning a little faster the free end
vibrates against the soundboard with the vibration of the string.
