Hi everyone - I too am interested in the string setup of Alto
gurdies. I'm drawing up plans at the moment. The tuning I'm
interested in would be somthing like :
4 Chanters g1, c, g, d1 - Trompettes c, g d1 and Drones d, G and C.
String length of chanters 350mm, Trompettes 390mm and Drones 410mm.
Does anyone out there know what tension I should go for to get a nice
balance using these strings. Would I be better with gut for chanters
and trompette or wound steel such as the Pirastro piranito strings?.
I'm planning on using wound steel for the drones. The instrument, by
the way will be a large lute backed gurdy.
